Last weeks reading, chapter 2- The Wrong Application, focused on technology and the different ways it can be used either as a tool for consumption or production. The first approach takes the stance that students learn mainly from receiving information that is already existing. While the second approach is of the understanding that students learn by doing. That it is from their experiences that students form new knowledge. This chapter acknowledges that technology has drastically changes and uses the example of how encyclopedias used to be printed however with the rise of the internet and Wikipedia, its publication has stopped and we have entered an age where information is free, online and instantaneous. How information is received and responded to has expanded as is now able to reach multiple audiences within seconds around the world. Ultimately “the media available at the time determines how we communicate, how many people we can reach, how long our communication records are retained, and how we receive a response”. The chapters continues to describe how technology allows learners to access a rich collection of resources to help facilitate learning and provide great opportunities for students to take the role of not just learner but also creator, producer and entrepreneurs. That being said educators must find a comfortable position using technology so that it can complement their teaching and create the best learning experience for the students.
