Chapter 2: The Wrong Application

Chapter 2 discusses the way technology is perceived within the class and how this perception is depicted in the classroom. The chapter discusses two approaches in how students learn and what their role is in relation to technology. The two approaches are: assuming that students are consumers of knowledge with the assistance of technology to help guide them into attaining knowledge better and improve their academic outcome. The second approach is having students learn through technology by creating projects and products and this enables students to form new knowledge through this process. In the first approach, the chapter talks about how the relationship between human and technology is two-fold. Specifically, the relationship between teachers and technology, it is seen as positive as technology is used as a tool to help innovate and make work within the classroom more efficient. This makes it helpful for the teacher as technology creates an efficient classroom, however, the negative connotation as teachers could rely solely on technology when teaching. This could also cultivate a sense of fear as technology could be seen as replacing the teacher’s role in the classroom.

The second approach focuses on the idea that students further their learning through creating and producing using technology. Technology is used along students’ abilities and learning and allows them to gain new knowledge as they communicate and share their experiences with one another, collaborating within the context of learning the content. This approach is more beneficial as students are not limited by the teacher’s use of technology but rather is encouraged to use technology to empower their learning. It creates a sense of responsibility for their learning for students and encourages them to pursue their own interests and ideas appropriate for their individual style of learning. This enables the teacher to have a sense of what each student’s learning is like and track their progress through their use of technology within their classroom.
