Ch. 3 – Wrong Expectation of Tech.

Last week, we covered Ch.3 called the ‘Wrong Expectation of Technology’. I found this topic to be particularly interesting due to the fact that society relies so heavily on technology for EVERYTHING. One may argue, are assessing children through technology a right or wrong method? Does it benefit or hinder a child’s learning? In my opinion, I shared that standardized testing and technology do not go hand in hand together for various reasons but mostly, due to the fact that these automated test scores can create an impact in a child’s confidence if they do not do well. In viewpoint of the teacher, this is a con because standardized tests constrict a teacher’s capability to modify to student’s learning differences.

In context to the group presentation, I learned how to use a feature of an online storybook/unit book/assignment in replacement of a hardcopy textbook or worksheet. I found this to be the most fascinating part of the presentation because it is a simple teaching tool that can be used in numerous ways. When having the opportunity to explore the educational technology tool, I discovered that I was able to insert audio, videos, images, and text and make it as creative as possible. I had fun while doing this too! There are many pro’s to this feature such as it being easily accessible (whether it is work expected to be completed at home or in school) and students are able to add to their work digitally. However, one con that I noted is that sometimes, there is the issue with the lack of technology in a classroom or at home due to students living in low socio-economic neighbourhoods. Nonetheless, I believe when there is a will there is a way so, if I did run into this challenge in my own future teaching career, I would designate students to have certain time periods to use the technology that is given to them and that way, they are more focused and driven to complete their work in a timely manner.
